My First Self Tanning Experience | St. Moriz.
Summer is coming again and I’m sitting here (like every summer in my life) like a pale, eye hurting human-thing. This Summer I wanted to make a change! I can’t sit in the sun to tan, I will only go super painfully red, or I will literally go sick if I had too much sun. I’ve never get tanned in my life, my arms a tiny bit but the rest of my body is a big no no! They always say that when you’re sunburned it goes tan afterwards but with me that’s not the case, I’ll be as white as when I started *sigh*.
When I was younger I did use some self tan sprays that develop overtime, but only on my legs (don’t ask me why, lol). I have never seen myself tan in my whole life so I was really curious on how I would look like.
If you are a pale person like me you might know the insecurities that come with it in the Summer. I don’t mind being pale in the Winter months but when Summer is around the corner I feel like I’m the only pale person. First of all you see EVERYTHING, let’s just say that it’s not particularly slimming. I’m not the skinniest so I’m already really insecure about my body, but being so pale doesn’t help when it’s hot outside and you want to wear shorts…
Alright enough with the babbling! Let’s get on with what the post is actually about, self tanning.
They don’t sell a lot of self tanners here in shops in The Netherlands. I did know that I wanted a mousse, it sounded the best and the easiest. In my local drugstore they sell only 2 brands, their own, and St. Moriz. When I went in there the ones from St. Moriz were sold out, just my luck of course.. So I bought the one from the drugstore itself. There was nothing on there that said what shade it was so I think it was just an universal shade.
Back home I did everything that I needed to do, I watched som YouTube videos on how to do it so I was prepared haha! I took a shower and scrubbed my whole body with a mitt. I also shaved so my skin was nice and smooth. After the shower I waited around an hour because I’ve heard that when you self tan right after, the self tan is going to settle in your pores and that’s what we don’t want right? Right before tanning I applied some moisturizer on the dry areas like elbows, knees, ankles, feet, wrists and hands. I also moisturized my face!
It was finally time to tan!
I shook the bottle and applied it on my self tanner mitt. I wore some old underwear in case it would stain. I applied the self tanner on the skin beginning at my legs and working upwards. I only applied a tiny bit of product on my hands and feet because I didn’t want them to be too dark. When I was applying it I didn’t see a lot of color difference which I found pretty weird because in the videos I’ve watched there was. My hopes were not that high! I applied it all over and waited till it dried a little. I then wore some old baggy clothes when it was developing. After 5 hours I washed it all off and it basically came all off… All that work, the whole day doing nothing and waiting…. for NOTHING! UGH!
Second try, other tanner…
I didn’t get the results I wanted so the next day I went to another drugstore to see if they had the St. Moriz self tanner there. Luckily they did! Because I was so disappointed I chose the dark one, this must work! Back home I again took a shower and prepared for the self tanner. I did the same thing as the other one, the guard already turned out darker so I was hopeful. This self tanner was a little bit more streaky and harder to blend though, it kept sliding around on my skin. On my face it looked quite blotchy, but I knew in my mind that it would go away again with the rinse. I wore my baggy clothes again and waited 5 hours. I was looking quite tan now so I knew this one had worked. After the 5 hours I rinsed it off and I was left with a really nice tan!
I’ve been really stupid to not make before pictures, I can be such a chaos sometimes… I’m sorry 🙁
This is what it turned out like, I only took a selfie but I think you can see the results quite well. I’m definitely not eye hurting pale anymore.
I do look a bit orange on the pictures I took with my Canon but in real life it definitely was not looking that orange, this is what it looks like when I take a picture on my phone.
Much better right!?
For the first time self tanning I don’t think I did a really bad job! I do have a little patchiness on my hands and feet but those are the hardest parts to get right even when you do it all the time, so I don’t blame myself for that.
This is what my hands look like, ignore the rough nails. It’s not that bad isn’t it? 🙂
The pictures are 4 days after I’ve tanned and it still looks nice so I’m really happy with this one. It doesn’t look orange and it looks quite naturel. I’m finally tan! It’s something I really needed to get used to when I looked in the mirror lol, but I do really like it and I feel much more comfortable in shorts now weirdly enough. I do think it’s really time-consuming because you need to do it every week and sit a whole day at home in my case, because I know most of the people sleep in their tan but I don’t think I can do that. The tan feels really sticky on the skin and I hate that feeling, second of all I don’t want to ruin my sheets so yeah staying at home all day it is!
I do think I will maintain this tan this Summer because I do really like it, it might take some time but I do think it’s worth it. It definitely makes me feel more Summery.
I’m not a self tan virgin anymore, haha!
